en un principio los chicos se presentaron por separado en el programa, pero no pasaron la prueba en el bootcamp del programa. cuando bajaron del escenario, fueron llamados otra vez a él y fue cuando one direction se formó. la IDEA de juntarlos fue de simon cowell, nicole scherzinger y louis walsh.
durante su participación en x factor, el grupo nunca estuvo nominado para abandonar el programa y TODO el mundo los tenía como claros favoritos para ganarlo. en el concurso, cantaron las siguientes canciones: torn, summer of 69, kids of america, my life would suck without you, TOTAL ECLIPSE of my heart, all you need is love, your song y only girl (in the world). en la final cantaron junto a robbie WILLIAMS la canción she’s the one y eligieron como single forever young.
aunque simon cowell había dejado CLARO que SOLO iba a contratar para su discográfica al ganador del programa, al día siguiente de que finalizase, one direction se reunieron con él y les informó de que syco music iba a contar con ellos.
es así como one direction empezaron a trabajar en su primer disco, en donde han escrito 5 de las canciones que lo forman y en donde también han colaborado cantantes como ed sheeran o tom fletcher. el disco lleva el nombre de up all night y se editó el 21 de noviembre de 2011, consiguiendo colocarse en el número 2 de las listas de venta en su primera semana en el mercado.
el primer single del disco fue what makes you beautiful, el cual fue número 1 en su semana de lanzamiento y le sigue gotta be you, consiguiendo el puesto número 2 en las listas.
el 21 de febrero de 2012 alzaron su primer brit award en la categoría de mejor single por what makes you beutiful.
one direction han firmado contrato con la discográfica columbia records, la encargada de llevar su carrera en eeuu.
el 20 de marzo de 2012 one direction entraron en la historia de la música siendo el primer grupo británico en conseguir entrar en el número uno de las listas de ventas de eeuu con su disco debut up all night la semana de su lanzamiento, habiendo vendido más de 176.000 copias.
